MIND BECOMES ONE’S OWN ENEMY

The ongoing pandemic has increased social isolation, which is the leading cause of mental illness and suicide. Love, support, and encouragement by family and friends act as a fertilizer which helps us to grow and reach our full potential. Not reaching our full potential is the key to unhappiness—some people who attempt suicide, maybe trying to escape the feeling of rejection and hurt. Anger directed towards others and also towards oneself may force a person to take this extreme step. A person who attempts suicide feels trapped. The mind makes the person believe there is no solution to his problems. Positive emotions are filtered out. Only negative emotions such as despair, hopelessness, helplessness seep in. The mind turns against itself and becomes it’s own enemy. Suicide may not always be planned. Sometimes suicide attempts happen at the spur of the moment when the person is in deep despair.

Prevention of suicide 1. Talking about one’s feelings is the single most important step to suicide prevention. The mind judges the person and decides the person is not worth living. 2. The sympathetic, non-judgmental attitude of our friends and family members, true love, care, and concern lifts the fog. The person can think again. Talking openly and honestly about suicidal thoughts and feelings can help save lives. 3. Discussing the PLAN, MEANS, TIME SET, and INTENTION  will help ward off the immediate danger by simply postponing the act. In the meantime, the help of psychiatrists and psychologists can be sought who are trained in crisis intervention. Once the crisis is averted, a positive lifestyle will help the person deal with the stresses of day to day life. Habits to adopt for healthy living 1.Healthy diet including all food groups like carbohydrates, proteins, fats, vitamins, and minerals 2. Plenty of sleep give time for the brain to heal 3. Getting out in Sun. Morning and evening leisurely walk and enough vitamin D helps  the brain to repair itself 4. Mild to a moderate exercise routine will release endorphins and relieve stress 5.End social isolation and loneliness and prevent social disintegration 6.Work for your progress 7.Engaging in meaningful activities and helping others 8.Developing hobbies 9. Not being over-ambitious 10.Taking life as it comes 11. Mindfulness exercises yoga and meditation.
